Scribe post for Friday 5th and Tuesday 9th

Last Friday we went over our homework that was due, which was a math sheet including work and power problems. The questions and answers to the math problems were:

1. How much work is done to move a box if the force applied to that box is 65.7N and it is moved a distance of 12.1 m?
W= Fd
W= 65.7N × 12.1 m
W= 794.97 J

2. If 75 J of work are used to move a motorcycle 3.64 m, what is the amount of force applied to that motorcycle?
F= W ÷ d
F= 75 J ÷ 3.64 m
F= 20.60N

3. If I have used 0.37 N on a marble and it has a work amount of 0.16 J, what is the distance that marble has gone?
d= W ÷ F
d= 0.16 J ÷ 0.37N
d= 0.43 m

4. A skateboarder does 438.84 J of work. If this occurs over a period of 21.8 seconds, how much power does that skateboarder use?
P= W ÷ t
P= 438.84 J ÷ 21.8 s
P= 20.13

5. A construction worker uses a running saw that weighs 35.28 N on a board that is 3.6 m long. If the power output of the saw is 6.35 W, what was the amount of time the saw was used?
W= Fd
W= 35.28N × 3.6 m
W= 127.01 J

t= W ÷ P
t= 127.01 J ÷ 6.35 W
t= 20s

6. How much work is applied to your backpack if 11W of power are used for 681 seconds?
W= P × t
W= 11W × 681 s
W= 7491 J

7. a. A soccer ball weighs 17.3N and can be kicked a distance of 7.5 m. What is the work applied to the soccer ball?
b. If the ball travels that distance in 2.4 seconds, what is the soccer player’s power?

a. W= Fd
W= 17.3N × 7.5 m
W= 129.75 J

b. P= W ÷ t
P= 129.75N ÷ 2.4s
P= 54.06 W

8. a. If a car’s motor weighs 12289.7 N and works at 530893.44 J, what is the distance the car has been moved?
b. Using the above number for work if the car is used for 15 minutes (!!!), how much power has the car used?

a. d= W ÷ F
d= 530,893.44 J ÷ 12,289.7 N
d= 43.2 m

b. P= W ÷ t
P= 530,893.44 J ÷ 900 s
P= 589.88 W

Afterwards, we were handed a project or visual presentation in relation to simple machines. The directions of the visual presentation are on Moodle and the attachment to the directions is under the 15th March-21st March called, Simple Machines Visual Representation Directions. The link to the Science page on Moodle is:

Every group was assigned one of the six simple machines. The groups are:
Pulley - Gio & Julia
Wheel & Axle - Viktor & Alix
Lever - Erik, Reza & Vance
Inclined Plane - Laura & Antonia
Screw - Cip & Bryce
Wedge - Kat & Emilie; Fabi & Iva

On Friday Ms. D Also reminded us that there will be a quiz coming up soon but it will surely not be until Thursday 18th. Our homework was to Finish our Superhero’s by Tuesday. That was all we covered in class on Friday, March 8th.

On Tuesday’s class we began by shortly and basically presenting our Superheroes that were due. All of the Superheroes looked terrific and interesting and so Ms. D announced that she will be hanging then outside in the hallway. After this we went to the upper computer lab and complete an activity Mr. Hays had asked us to check out and play around with. The website we explored was about Gizmos and it was called, Ants on a Slope! We did not only play with the website, we had a packet that we had to complete regarding friction and inclined planes! We had some hypotheses to answer and other activities! This is what we covered in class Friday 5th and Tuesday the 9th.

On the right is an idea of how Ants on a Slope looked like!

Science February 23rd and 25t

Balloon rocket final!

On Tuesday our class worked on our balloon rocket designs. Trying to come up with the perfect designs for their categories(categories shown in previous post). The whole class was spent doing this.
Then on Thursday we tested our final design.

The competing teams were

Alix, Vance, and Cip competed for farthest and fastest.

Fabi,Gio, and Emilie competed for farthest and fastest

Noam,Kat, and Erik also competed for fastest and farthest.

Iva, Antonia, and Lara (who was absent Thursday) competed for going 4m forward and then come back

Bryce, Reza, and Viktor also competing for the direction changing rocket.

Unfortunately every team had some sort of bad luck throughout the testing.

Results!!!

Farthest and longest
were won by Cip, Vance ,and Alix by a fairly large margin. They were followed by Emilie, Gio, and Fabi. They were in turn followed by Noam, Kat, and Erik who experienced very bad luck

Forward and back was tied because neither teams design worked during the three rounds we were given.

After this Ms. D went over the lab conclusion which is due Tuesday, March 2nd.

Right before we left our Quests from last week were returned to us and we were either happy or sad about the grade.

Newton's 3 laws and Momentum

Hello readers of this blog.

On Friday we went over Newton's 3 laws and momentum.

Newton's first law: Newton's first law is Inertia or that an object will do what they do unless a force is acting on it

Newton's second law: Newton's second law is the formula force=mass x accerleration

Newton's third law: Newton's third law is the to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction

Momentum: momentum=mass x velocity or p=mv

Momentum is the quantity of an object

More velocity = more momentum

Science Class Friday 14

Hello Seventh Graders!
This is the scribe post for Friday 15, 2010! At the beginning of class we reviewed our homework which was to answer two random questions.
The two random questions were:
1. Where is Marianas Trench? In what Ocean is it located and how deep is it?
2. What is the capital of Bolivia?

The answers to the questions above were:
1. Marianas Trench is located in the Pacific Ocean – Challenger Deep is the deepest point of it and it is 11,033 meters below sea level.
2. There are actually two capitals of Bolivia. One is Sucre and the other one is La Pas.
Secondly, we got back our homework that was due Thursday 14. The homework we got back was our graph and paragraph on another class’s data for the ping pong ball. This homework was worth 10 points.
Another task we covered was beginning our lab on FRICTION! Ms. D introduced the lab to us and she went over the purpose question, the hypothesis, and rubric as well as the conclusion and evaluation that we are going to be expected to write. The lab is called, Investigating the Factors that Affect Friction.
Just a reminder that we have homework due Tuesday 19! The homework is to graph the Red class’s data for the Tennis Ball and write a paragraph about it!!!
Well, those are the things we covered in class Friday 15.

The first science class since the break

Today is 01/22/10 and the first class since the break.
Today we learned to make a line graph that will correctly show acceleration. To do this you make the x-axis time and the y-axis speed. We Also learned to make a best fit line or curve. to do so you draw a line or curve through the graph that follows the general direction of the points on the graph. For the class, Ms.D assigned three people to take notes on the computers. the three people were
Noam : Notes A
Reza : notes B
Viktor : notes C
Today in science we also started a new unit, Physics.
for this unit our vocab words are
Force
Newton
Net Force
Unbalanced Forces
Balanced Forces
Friction
Static Friction
Sliding Friction
Rolling Friction
Fluid Friction
Gravity
Mass
Free Fall
Air Resistance
Terminal Velocity
Projectile
Inertia
Momentum
Law of Conservation of Momentum
Satellite
Centripetal Force
Today's science homework was to graph the data on the sheet you were given only for the ping pong ball. For the graph you should
-make a line graph
-include the best fit curve
-circle outliers
-label the X and Y axis
-label the title
and write a paragraph including acceleration, deceleration, ping pong ball, time, speed, correlation and best fit curve. This paragraph should include one sentence of support that includes outliers.

Friday december 11 09

Friday we reviewed our homework (acceleration problems 3). The formula (with the exception of 8.a) for all of the problems was (sf-si)/t=a. the plug and chug follow.
  1. (1.3cm/s-0cm/s)/100.75=0.01cm/s/s
  2. (142km/h-0km/h)/0.0009=157,777.78km/h/h)
  3. (287.6km/h-0km/h)/0.003h=95866.67
  4. (om/s-32.7m/s)/143.7s=-0.23m/s/s
  5. (41.5km/h-0kkm/h)/0.058=715.517km/h/h
  6. (2.4m/s-7.9m/s)/-3.65m/s/s=1.51s
  7. 9.8m/s/sx2.7s+0m/s=26.46m/s
  8. A)s=d/t____40km/2.3h=17.39km/h
B) (17.39km/h-0km/h)/0.51h=34.1km/h/h
____________________________--_______
After that we did a little bit of work on our acceleration/deceleration lab by posting our results on a Google dock sent to us by Ms.D a week or so ago
